This is a message from Arab LeHai – a nonprofit organization,

located in the city of Arad.

In the Negev region we have a severe crisis regarding stray dogs and cats. There are estimations that 20,000 dogs wonder through the Negev region, they belong to no one. Hundreds of dogs live here in Arad and the outskirts of the city. These dogs and puppies are faced with many dangers; getting run over by cars, diseases, hunger and thirst, abuse by bad people, severe cold in the winter and extreme heat in the summer. This is a desert region.

A war started on October 23, 2023, on multiple fronts. Since then, the dog crisis has worsened.

Not only are there less adoptions but many people abandon their dogs. Many Israelis serve in the army, others struggle to survive. They have financial problems and need to care for their families. Adoption of dogs and cats is the least of their priorities. We depend on donations, but since the war started the amount of donations has declined dramatically. The situation is very severe, when we do not receive donations, our ability to save animals is very limited.

Our volunteers do not get any financial compensation. They help in different ways; They help capture and rescue dogs and cats in distress. They foster dogs and cats, they drive dogs and cats to the veterinary, they also drive them to adoption days located in different locations in Israel.

On a regular basis we feed everyday 70 dogs and 150 cats who live outside in Arad and in the desert. (Many dogs live in the industrial zone and landfills near Arad)

In the past two years we decided to sterilize stray dogs, we capture and release them, after they recover. This prevents the birth of more puppies who will live outside in harsh conditions. (Since there are not enough homes/adoptions.) Capturing and sterilizing is a complicated and costly operation.

Most of the dogs and cats (also puppies and kittens) we care for have serious medical conditions that demand complicated veterinary care. The medical bills are thousands of shekels each month, and sometimes even tens of thousands of shekels in one month. These incredibly high costs threaten the existence of our non-profit organization. We desperately need donations to pay veterinary bills, pension bills (temporary homes for dogs and cats) and food, we need a lot of food for the stray dogs and cats!  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hani, a 10-month-old dog was rescued from the Bedouin region after she was poisoned by them. A wonderful Bedouin woman felt pity for the dying dog. The woman brought Hani to us at Arad LeHai. We rehabilitated Hani and now she needs a forever home.

GOOD NEWS; SHULI WAS ADOPTED

Three months later Shuli is in her new home.

She is the happiest dog in the world.

Shuli has a wonderful family and a new sister. With the help of her loving family, and a dog trainer, she is overcoming her fears.

Arad Lehai rescued Shuli. They need donations so they can rescue more dogs from the industrial zone. With your help many dogs will smile, just like Shuli.

  Shuli - before the Rescue.

“Shuli, a dog that the Bedouins got rid of, they placed her in the industrial zone of Arad. She had a broken leg and 10 puppies. A volunteer who feeds dogs in this area found her and of course we took her & the puppies. We gave all of them medical care. Shuli found a loving home & her puppies over time found homes. The broken leg could not be treated, it is an old wound. She lives with this, and it does not hurt her.” Arad LeHai

Arad Landfill – Harsh reality

“Around the landfill of Arad live several packs of dogs. It is impossible to rescue all of them. There is nowhere to place them, and many are wild dogs who fear people. The dogs live there, we feed them, we try to sterilize as many female dogs as possible. This is not easy because most of them fear us.

The dogs we do take are ones who are in distress, dogs who are injured or sick. We take female dogs who are nursing puppies and unable to take care of them in the Negev desert.Arad LeHai

Ginger, a nursing mother & her kittens were found in the industrial area of Arad. It was extremely difficult for her to find food at this location. One of the volunteers from Arad LeHai rescued Ginger & the kittens. The volunteer placed them in her yard, she fed the mother and made sure the family was safe. At the same time rescuers in Arad found an abandoned kitten thrown on the streets without a mother. They brought the kitten to Ginger who nursed him and adopted him. Ginger is such a compassionate cat! Ginger was sterilized. Now she is looking for a forever home along with her adorable kittens.
